"I want to work in close contact with animals"
"I want to learn about animals' influence on the human mind."
"I want to explore the relationship between nature, animals, and humans."
In this department, we provide four courses to meet such wishes.
With a variety of specialized subjects and extensive practical training, students will spend four years gaining a wide range of knowledge and skills related to animals. At the same time, they will acquire the expertise that suits their future.
In addition, students will also receive general education in order to develop English proficiency, and management skills, which have been in increasing demand in recent years in the field of the animal industry.
There are a wide variety of future career paths, not only animal-related but also in the business, government and educational fields. A student could go on to become a businessperson, civil servant or science teacher in junior high / high schools.
This is one of the attractive points of studying "animals" at a four-year university.
Point 1
"The first department in Japan"
where students can learn a wide range of topics on the theme of coexistence with animals
With the spread of companion animals and assistant dogs, there is a growing need for those who can understand the ecology of animals in various places in society and can make appropriate decisions.
In this department, we are developing classes conducted by teachers with various specialties and practical training, where students can actually have contact with animals. Students can learn about "coexistence of humans and animals" from various viewpoints.
Point 2
4-course learning system that allows you to deepen your expertise according to the future you are aiming for
At the Tokyo West Campus, we introduced a course system consisting of the following courses.
(Course is assigned in the third year)
"Course in Animal Behavior & Management"
where you can study a wide range of subjects such as zoo studies and ethology.
"Course in Animal Assisted Intervention"
where you explore the effects of animals on the mind and body of humans.
"Course in Wildlife Science"
where you consider the relationship between humans and animals in nature.
"Course in Veterinary Nursing & Animal Welfare"
on the Senju Campus, where students aim to obtain a national qualification to become a "Pet Nurse" through practical learning at the veterinary hospital annexed to the campus.
Point 3
State-of-the-art equipment that stimulates students' inquiring spirit and extensive training equipment
On the Tokyo West Campus, there is an "Companion Animal Center (CAC)" where you can actually breed animals such as dogs and cats and observe their behavior, as well as a "Horse Intervention Activity Center" where you can learn about riding therapy, and dog runs.
The Senju Campus is fully equipped with facilities for practical training such as the "Affiliated Animal Hospital".
While using the latest equipment, students can combine the expertise they have learned in classes with practical skills and national qualifications.
The study of Course in Animal Behavior & Management covers a wide range of topics related to captive animals. They are broadly divided into "zoos", "aquariums", "behavioral and psychological fields of companion animals", and "basic zoology" necessary for animal breeding, and practical education is provided in each field.
Contact with animals causes various changes in the human mind and body. The study of Course in Animal Assisted Intervention is to explore the mechanism of change from various perspectives such as psychology, pedagogy, ergonomics, and psychiatry. While studying not only animals but also their target, human beings, we aim to scientifically elucidate the better relationship between humans and animals and the effects that animals have on human society.
The Course in Wildlife Science offers a variety of laboratories to meet the interests of students who are "interested in wildlife ecology," "how to protect endangered animals," and "the relationship between animal behavior and the environment. There are plenty of opportunities for outdoor fieldwork, taking advantage of the environment of the Tokyo West Campus, which is blessed with nature. Through learning about animals, students will consider a new future in which humans and animals can coexist.
"Pet animals" such as dogs and cats not only bring "the joy of living with pets", but also their significance in society has been increasing, as seen medical care, long-term care, welfare, and educational activities are carried out through animals because of the importance of their impact on humans, In addition, with the sophistication and diversification of veterinary medicine and the improvement of breeding responsibilities, expectations for veterinary nurses are increasing. From these backgrounds, the " Veterinary Nurses (Pet Animals) Act " was enacted in June 2019 with the aim of improving the qualifications of animal nurses and optimizing their work. Along with the acquisition of new national qualifications, we will train students to become veterinary nurses who will be responsible for team veterinary medicine.
